Matthew (26) Reflection 3

Our project leader, Nicholas was absent for IPW period this week. However we have continued on making progress with our project.

There are currently a few questions on our project.
1. Is there a way to predict on a long term basis on possibly when a future tsunami might strike like for volcanoes?
2. Is there a way to calculate the distructive force of a tsunami and then use that information and data to simulate this and find ways to act on it?
3. Could there be a safety mechanism in place to be activated to minimize the destructive force of a tsunami eg. a rising wall that prevents the wave from making landfall or at least minimize its impact?
4. Can special materials or designs for structures be made to allow people to seekrefuge in during an emergency?

I would strongly support the idea of a structure to minimize the impact of a tsunami as it would prevent the loss of many lives. I also agree with the idea to possibly predict when a tsunami might strike. However no matter how we manage to do that, we could never possibly predict the exact time such occurances might happen because we can never fully predict the force of mother nature.

I have learned about the distructive force of a tsunami and how much damage such events can cause and that there might be a possible breakthrough in scientific study that might allow us to reduce the damage of such powerful and unavoidable natural disasters

Nicholas Wan (27) Reflection 3

I was absent for the 3rd lesson. However, my group briefed me on what was discussed.

I currently want to ask these questions based on Tsunamis ;

(1) How can we minimize the effects of Tsunamis?
(2) How many countries are affected by Tsunamis?
(3) How to construct a house so that it is not affected by Tsunamis?
(4) How deadly can the worst Tsunami be?
(5) Is there any way to prevent Tsunamis?
(6) Or can there be a way invented?

I agree that a way to prevent Tsunamis should be invented, or at least a confirmed way of saving all the people if there were to be a Tsunami. As there are bomb shelters, there could be a sort of a Tsunami shelter or something similar .

I learned more about Tsunamis , how to develope questions for the topic , and how to research using many different sources , such as the internet .

Niger (28) Reflection 2

 I felt that lesson 2 had more progress and we have chosen out topics, which is Natural Disasters, focused on the disaster : tsunami. I luve this disaster as it is quite rare but nowadays, this is getting more common. Could it be 2012? We also did reaseach on tsunamis this week and the tasks are on the right hand side of the page.

Matthew (26) Reflection 2

We have recently selected our topic and thats on natural disasters and we have specifically zoned in on tsunamis. The 2004 tsunami had a great impact on our lives and so we have decided to use it as our main topic. i have researched and thus found out that a tsunami is caused by an earthquake, landslide or volcanic eruption and that it travels at a very fast pace further out at sea but soon grows in height and size as it approaches the shore. I also found out that the first tsunami wave may not be the largest as there might be continual waves every 10-60 minutes. I now know that Singapore is safe as it is sheltered from the tsunami by other land masses surrounding it like Malaysia and Indonesia. And that a tsunami that resulted from a 9.0 magnitude earthquake would take 10 hours to reach the shores of Singapore. which makes it incredibly safe from tsunamis.

However i would still want to research on what a tsunami resulting from a undersea earthquake would affect Singapore and what can nations in a tsunami prone area can do to prevent such disasters from happening.

With the macbook, I can make use of the largest encyclopedia, the internet to help me to find out more on such topics and I would want to spread awareness by telling others about this interesting and engaging topic.

Hsuan Ting (25) Reflection 2

On this second week, we were asked to choose the theme we want our GRACE project to be based on.
We chose NO. 57 World Weather Disasters From the 66 Suggested titles.
Which contain:
Hurricane
Tornado
Taiphoon
Tsunami due to sea level rising/Earthquake
Earth Quake
Avalanches.
We will be focusing on the Disaster "Tsunami"(AKA tidal Wave)
I undertook the job to research for "Ways to detect Tsunami"
which will be essential as we are planning to design a item the can foresee and forewarn the publicity that a tidal wave is coming and we can evacuate people faster.
For some reason we have a change in the group Postitions.
Nicholas Wan became the Leader
Matthew became the Vice
Niger became the Questioner
and I BECAME THE ENCOURAGER........
what a nice job......

Nicholas (27) Reflection 2

This week's lesson was more interesting. We had more discussion rather than just talking.

For some various Reasons, the appointed role members have been changed.

Anyway, we also chose the Theme for our GRACE project , Theme No.57 , World Weather Disasters.

I currently know that there are many natural disasters happening around the world ,
some examples are ;

I want to know what kind of factors causes Tsunamis, what effects do Tsunamis have, how do these effects affect the lives of human , and why is Singapore safe of such disasters. I also want to know how do Scientists detect the coming of Tsunamis and what signs do Tsumanis have before they come.

I can make use of my Observation and Analytical skills to find more data and information on tsunamis.

I can find more information on this topic on the internet, via searching Google / Wikipedia or various other websites.

I want to tell others all about Tsunami , and maybe produce a short clip / animation explaining how it affects others lives.

Niger (28) Reflection 1

I think that lesson one is a overview of GRACE. Basically, we are split into teams and each team consist of 4 people. Our team is named Team Salvation. We did not really do anything for the first week except creating this blog and electing the members. I hope we can do well in GRACE.

Grace 2010

==> Reflection on Lesson 1

This weeks grace lesson was rather boring, as we only discussed about the project and did nothing about it. We came up with a group name - Team Salvation, which means saving of the earth or something .  We appointed roles by drawing lots, and here are the appointed roles ;

Hsuan Ting      (25) -- Vice-Leader

Matthew Ng     (26) -- Encourager

Nicholas Wan  (27) -- Questioner

Niger Cheong  (28) -- Leader

I hope the next lesson is more fun. Thats all for now .
